History Of Chai

India- home to different ethnic groups brings a unique kind of diversity to its land. Every state has its own culture, and traditions, with equally being diverse in its food culture as well. Yet out of all the cuisines and thousands of dishes in India, there’s one golden beverage that stands as the common staple of hospitality, conversations: big and small, gossip to business deals, everything happens around… The Golden Drink-Tea! With more than 5000 years of its history, it was started by being used as a medicinal plant, slowly transitioning into a regular drink that spread from China to all parts of the world. It soon became a high society craze around Europe and England, giving rise to social events such as teatime, high tea, etc. With the growing demand, the British East India Company saw India as the best option to grow tea and export. Soon Assam tea Industry was started, and the plantations spread across Darjeeling and parts of South India too. Though the native Assam groups were already using wild tea leaves way before, it was not until the recent 100 years that tea became popular in India, in the 1920s, it started to be advertised to all the sectors of the society and soon India itself emerged as a huge tea market with vendors setting up tea stalls across railway stations and it was available in cafes as well. It became a necessity to start your day with a cup of Chai, it became the center of socializing and gossip culture, and phrases like chai adda and chai pe charcha have been popular since then. Today 70% of tea produced is consumed within the country itself. With more than 3000 varieties, tea remains, the most incomparable drink across the globe.

Our Story

The story of 64 Chai Bar begins with a dream, driven by a passion for chai and a determination to create something remarkable. It all started when I embarked on my journey in the world of coffee at CCD (Café Coffee Day). At that time, I aspired to start my own café, but I was uncertain about the brand and concept. However, the seeds of entrepreneurship had been sown. After my stint at CCD, I joined Chaipoint, where I spent a significant 6-7 months. It was during this time that I had an eye-opening experience, recognizing the immense potential in the Chai Café business. The prospect of bringing a unique chai experience to people resonated deeply with me. So, in 2019, I took the bold step to leave my job and venture into the world of chai. Ironically, just as I quit my job and was gearing up to launch my café, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing me to stay at home without employment for several months. During this time, I briefly worked at Itsy Bitsy, a craft store, and then I joined a foundation where I dedicated nearly a year of my life. Despite my capability and the alignment of my skills with the job requirements, I encountered a common obstacle – a lack of formal education credentials. This recurring issue ignited a determination in me: I decided that I had had enough of working for others and was ready to work for myself. With this resolve, I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey and founded 64 Chai Bar in December 2021. The initial days were challenging as I grappled with the realities of running my own business. I soon realized that the initial vision I had was not enough; I needed to adapt and evolve. This meant actively seeking feedback, understanding

customer needs, and staying attuned to market demands. We continuously expanded our product offerings, and any items that didn’t meet customer expectations underwent rigorous research and development to improve their taste. My fledgling venture slowly but steadily began to grow. Today, we are setting our sights on even greater heights, with plans to transition 64 Chai Bar into a Private Limited Company. Furthermore, we aspire to build multiple brands under this venture, creating opportunities for those who may not have a formal education but possess the vision and passion to achieve remarkable things. Our goal is to generate employment and leave a lasting impact on our community. In summary, the journey of 64 Chai Bar is a testament to perseverance and a commitment to creating a meaningful impact in the world of chai and entrepreneurship.

About Our Founder

I’m Abhishek Thakur, a 26-year-old originally from Jharkhand. My journey began in a small city in Jharkhand when my father faced a severe setback in his business. To provide for our family, he decided to relocate to Bangalore in 2015. He started working at a hardware shop in the local market, doing his best to make ends meet. Despite the hardships due to his age, he never complained. In 2016, I made the decision to join my father in Bangalore to support the family. We both found employment at Arvind Garment Limited as ordinary workers. After about 6-7 months, I realized that the meager salary of 7-8 thousand rupees wouldn’t be sufficient to support my family adequately. So, without much contemplation, I transitioned to a security guard job, which offered a higher salary, around 19 thousand rupees. After a year, my situation improved slightly. At this

point, I had a heart-to-heart conversation with my parents. I acknowledged that while I was currently helping the family financially, I had no skills, formal qualifications, or even strong communication abilities. I stressed the importance of planning for our future, explaining that if I couldn’t meet the company’s job requirements in the long run, we’d be left in a vulnerable position. I realized the need to work on my skills and find an environment that would nurture my growth. One day, while strolling through Raja Rajeshwari Nagar, I stumbled upon Café Coffee Day. It captivated me, and I couldn’t resist going inside to inquire about job openings. A staff member directed me to their head office on Vittal Malya Road with instructions to submit my resume. I nervously attended the interview, but fortunately, I secured a job as a team member with a salary of 7.5 thousand rupees. This time, I decided to overlook the salary and prioritize my personal development. I focused on learning and self-improvement. Little did I know that this was the turning point in my journey. Working at Café Coffee Day became my dream job, and it was there that my dreams took flight. I resolved that one day I would open my own café and build a remarkable company known for its integrity, creating opportunities for talented young individuals, and being environmentally conscious. Later, I joined Chai Point and gained valuable experience in various aspects, including product creation, sourcing raw materials, understanding customer service, and the paramount importance of customer satisfaction. Working for a modest salary to enhance my knowledge became a normal part of life. However, after facing a rejection from my previous job, I decided I had had enough. I didn’t want history to repeat itself. It was then that I heard an inner voice urging me to seize the opportunity to build what I have today. I poured my heart and soul into this endeavor. In the wake of all these experiences, I finally realized my dream by establishing “64 Chai Bar".
